Description

2% Tincture of iodine is used to test starch conversion for partial and all-grain brewing. Collect a spoonful of wort in a small cup or light-colored bowl. Put a drop of iodine on the side of the cup, then tip your wort into the iodine. If it turns black, there are still unconverted starches present and you need to continue your mash. If it turns red or light brown, starch conversion is complete and you can start sparging.

Starch conversion confirmed

First time trying whole grain brewing, I wanted to confirm complete starch conversion. Confirmed

Hard to find elsewhere

A good price on iodine for testing for breakdown to sugars, an item that was hard to find at other places.

Invaluable!

Chemistry! Does what it should do. Brewed a porter last month, had I not done the iodine test, I would have boiled only a partially converted test. Fortunately, a drop of iodine indicated when my mashing completed starch conversion, the ultimate result was a wonderfully finished product. Most easily seen over when wort is placed in a white bowl, then put a drop of iodine.

Does the trick, but...

It has a brush rather than a dropper. It works just fine, I just had to flick it.
