Fermenting Crock Starter Kits
These 1, 3, and 5-gallon fermented food starter kits from Ohio Stoneware are complete with crock, weight, and lid. Now you can make your own sauerkraut or ghost pepper hot sauce all from the convenience of your kitchen counter. These multi-functional preserving crocks serve many uses such as the traditional use of preserving vegetables like cucumbers for pickling and cabbage for sauerkraut, or for everyday uses like pantry and kitchen containers. Crocks filled with food for fermentation purposes should be kept in cool, dry environments which allow the vegetables or fruits to ferment naturally. These American Made crocks are safe and easy to clean due to our lead-free glazes. They are also oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe - though we tend to recommend hand washing with care.
Stone Crocks
Stoneware fermentation crocks are a traditional way to ferment food and have been used for centuries. One thing to note about stoneware crocks is that because they are ceramic, they are fragile, and might not survive if dropped, or knocked. Overall, stoneware fermentation crocks are an excellent choice for fermenting food at home, as they are durable, non-reactive, and allow for anaerobic fermentation to take place.
Crock Covers
We have crock covers for each size of stoneware crock - 1, 3, and 5-gallon sizes. It’s important to keep the lid on at all times to keep out dust, insects, etc., and when removing vegetables, be careful not to keep the crock open any longer than necessary.
Crock Weights
When fermenting food in a stoneware crock, it is important to use a weight to keep the food submerged beneath the water-sealed lid. This prevents mold or unwanted bacteria from forming on the surface of the fermenting food.
